MUSIC upDATE - The Cold War Kids are refreshing. This is an LA post grunge post hardcore punk band... and by "post" I mean that they are past all that garbage and back to making raw beautiful rock-n-roll. If you have heard the Black Keys then you have heard the "Kids" since the Keys stole from them...

Now, don't get me wrong... I love me some Keys but this is just as good if not better, and they are not carbon copies of one another.

So, if you like rock-n-roll then you love Zeppelin. Period. There is no argument here... this is a statement of fact... and if you love Zeppelin than you should enjoy not only the Black Keys and the Black Crowes, but also this super classy band... Cold War Kids

I filmed 4 or 5 songs from this years "Good Shepherd Band Christmas Sing-A-Long 2011" with a couple other guys. The entire concert was recorded and the hope is that some of the songs can be put together for a short live video.

If this even comes close to working there will be better film in the future. Also check out the great rendition of I Saw Three Ships.

Pixar Documentary

This post falls under art, and movies, and I guess the film has music throughout and its something that I enjoyed so lets throw Nate in there as well.

I watched this documentary a couple of nights ago while Katie fell asleep. There was nothing extremely captivating about this documentary, but it did give extensive detail about the beginning and rise of Pixar.

I think the most interesting part is listening to the creators and artists at Pixar talking about the importance of always making great movies. When you look at the Pixar history it is hard to find a bad movie. Maybe there are some you do not enjoy as much as others, but there are not "bad" or "crappy" films here. Everyone is visually beautiful and the stories are all quite unique.

But, Cars 2 is coming out next... and I am not sure about this one. Maybe the irony is that right after seeing the Pixar magicians talk about never falling short, this summer they will actually do more than that... maybe they will drive right off a cliff. I sure hope not. (p.s. - Finding Nemo was my favorite... than I just watched it again... and... O yea... it is still my favorite)

One afternoon I decided to illustrate "my dream life". This was about two years ago. Basically it (my dream life) is composed of me and my dog living in Ireland, and me serving and occasionally drinking Guinness. Pretty selfish, I know.

Well, now I really have the dream life. I have been called and saved by Christ, I have the most beautiful wife, and we have our first child on the way.

I dare anyone to come up with a better dream than what I've got.

For ClearNote Churches Christmas sing-a-long, Katie made a large apple tree, and I painted some apples. While I was mass producing the 11-14 apples, I took the time to put one down on canvas.

Eventually I hope to have some paintings available for purchase. Maybe through Etsy.

Katie and I are working on a plan to create multiple pieces while searching out the best venue(s) to sell them in.

I thought a good way to start this new chapter of my life (blog) is to show an image I didn't create (even though I may have inspired it). This pic sums up a lot about the recent years of my life. It shows how music and love and graphic design have all brought me and my wife together.

I have to state that this is not all that has brought us together; God and the church have been the biggest factors, but these more simple things have been a key to our long success.

It is great to have a wife that has such similar interests. Believe me.
Well that's it. No deep insight into what graphic design is. No opinion on why the Black Keys didn't win record of the year. Nothing at all about why The King's Speech didn't sweep every academy award for being the greatest movie ever made since Highlander...

Best Album of the Past Decade

So... is Vampire Weekend the best album of the past 10 years? We could pick that record apart and here are some things that would possibly stand out to us.

Every song on the record is worth listening to and worth listening to the lyrics.

The sound may not be wholly new (Paul Simon?) but it sure is fresh.

The record works so well as a whole and not just a large amount of hit singles.

The music videos made for this record are sweet and really give you a good taste for what the band is all about.

It is pretty amazing that this is the bands first record. Not even Coldplay, U2 or the Beatles can say they made such a good first record.

So... best? I think we'll have to wait another 5 years to really be able to look back to this past decade. Vampire Weekend (and the Avett's) are still too new to be truly critical.

What really makes music worth listening to?

I think that Bob Dylan sucks.

His voice absolutely drives me crazy.

I once listened to 3 of his songs in a row and than hit myself in the face with a coffee pot. (not a true story, just an example)

Also... Radiohead has the same effect on me.

More then 3 songs and I'm running into a wall.

I'd rather listen to the Backstreet Boys greatest hits. (seriously)

So, what really makes music worth listening to?

When has it ever been ok to just walk up to someone and smack them right across the cheek?

Actually, in ancient Viking times this was the language that was used for one person to tell the person they were slapping that they really enjoyed the meal that they just ate. It didn't have to be the person preparing the meal that was receiving this loving slap, it could just be any random viking.

You see, it is just to complicated sometimes to go into extraneous detail about how good a meal is. Do you start by telling how the garlic cloves were simmered just right so as to add flavors that compete with the best episode of LOST? No... just a nice little slap will do.

So, the next time you eat something good, don't be stingy... tell the whole world... VIKING style.

I am so terribly (I can't spell... please don't correct in comment section) ready to be done with school, but I have this paper that I have to write by Thursday and a test to study for (also on Thursday).

School has been pretty light/easy, this semester. There have been times that I have put off some work and had to stay up 'till 4 in the morning working on it, but for the most part the work load has been light and the assignments quite simple.

Eric and Helen Rasmusen (a family in our church) lost both Eric's parents and their second daughter, of their 5 children, Elizabeth in a car/train collision on Monday. This is the statement that Eric sent to Herald-Times that showed up on the front page in the Wednesday paper.

"We are blessed. We have four wonderful children, and we had Lizzie for nine years. My parents lived their threescore and ten and more, and died quickly, and I was able to share 50 happy years with them."

It has been four long years but it finally happened. Today the Dave Matthews Band released their new album Big Whiskey and the Groo Grux King. I know that there are those who don't like Dave or don't like his new stuff, so I won't try to tell you that this is a great album. I love this band and this is a great day.

When I think of good old southern rock the Eagles and Tom Petty come to mind. It's rock and roll with that good 'ol country grillin', Budweiser drinkin', horseshoe tossing feel to it.

I just got the Avett Brother's album Emotionalism and it is sweet. If you don't have the album get it or atleast check out Die Die Die and The Ballad of Love and Hate.

The album Everything All the Time by Band of Horses is sweet as well. I am not sure which of their albums I like better. Just gotta have 'em both.

Say what you want to about the new U2 album, but make sure that you have really listened to Moment of Surrender before you attempt to diss this disc.

On Tuesday the new U2 album comes out, and if Rolling Stone is correct, this could be the best album of the year(I'm a little skeptic.) Also, (I'll)be on the look out for new albums from Blink 182, Third Eye Blind, Dave Matthews Band (minus Leroy), and Brand New.

'Till then, just listen to some good old music from these bands - (Achtung Baby/U2 - Ennema of the State/Blink 182 - Out of Vein/3eb - Before These Crowded Streets/Dave - and Sic Transit Gloria/Brand New)

Ch. 3 The Aggression of the Northerner

As a youth Robert E. Lee was branded with many different nick names from many different sources. Some called him Robert such as his loving mother Susan. Some called him Bob or Bobby such as his strict father William H. Lee III, and some called him stupid, but that is another story altogether. To go along with the nicknames, there was the desired result of calling him by such a name. In as much as his mother used his true name, she was also convening her love and affection for her son. His father on the other hand wish for a son with whom he could play catch, and thus gave him a fun and simple name by which he would be called.

Growing up on the north side of a small Dutch village in Virginia was an exciting time for young Robert. His families’ house sat on the top of lushes green hills surrounded on 3 sides by thick forest. The house was nothing to boast of, but the family did not live in poverty. During the summer months Robert would spend his time fishing, hunting, reading, and tending to 2 dozen chickens that his family owned. This was a relaxing time to say the least, but Robert was much more interested in the seasons where he was called off to grammar school. He dreamt during the long cool summer nights of what subjects and worlds he would journey to in his next year of school.

This particular story starts on the second to last day of summer before the start of his 15th year and the beginning of a new year of studies. You see, his birthday and the first day of school happened to be on the same day each year. It would seem as if his love for education came from the fact that he was born on the day that the children of Bernardsville set off on a new adventure in the realm of learning. It was a Saturday and Robert was herding the chickens into their coop before diner. Little did he know that an event was to take place that would forever change his life and the events there-in.

The last chicken was squawking and making evil eyes at Robert as he shooed it into the coop. This evening it had been extremely difficult to get all the chickens rounded up because they were in such an intense game of Sardines that even when he called to them to say that the game was over, the few that were hiding persisted on staying hid. Frustrated and pooped, he reached to close the gate to the coop when he was struck in the head with a small but solid rock. He turned quickly to see a dirty little boy in nothing but overalls standing about 20 paces to his right.

“What did you do that for, you tyke?” he sputtered at the boy. But the boy made no reply. “I said... what did you throw a rock at me for you miserable cur?” Than the boy who seemed as though he had just been in a pig pen picked up another stone and launched it with extreme accuracy at Robert’s knee. It struck the knee squarely and Robert let out a howl.

“Watch who your calling a cur, you ninny!” said the dirty boy quite sternly. Robert was extremely confused. He saw no reason why this boy was viciously attacking him with no reason what-so-ever. Robert moved towards the boy and asked,

“What’s your name n what’s your problem?”

“My name is Ulysses” replied the dirty boy, “and I don’t like you!” This confounded Robert. In all of his 15 years he had never had anyone not like him. He was the most beloved child in all of Bernardsville, and for all he knew the entire world.

“I don’t understand! Did I somehow offend you?” Robert asked softly.

“I don’t like you, I don’t like Bernardsville, and I don’t like Virginia!” exclaimed the boy coldly. That was the final stalk of grain for Robert. Now one talked bad about Virginia in his presence and got away with it. Earlier that year he had slapped an old hobo for saying that Virginia was not as pretty as Pennsylvania.

“This means was!” Robert shouted. “You will regret the day you even thought of slandering Virginia!” Just then, Robert turned to see all of the chickens had either flown the coop or quickly ran from the coop which he had forgotten to close when he was rudely interrupted by the stone. By the time he had gathered all the chickens the dirty boy was long gone.

Though he and the young Ulysses did not come to blows that fateful day, he had entered a verbal contract of war with the young insolent boy. This has been written know to put to rest all of the misconceptions of how the war of Northern Aggression came about.

The Truth of the War of Northern Aggresion/Southern Stupidity

Once there was a forty watt light bulb. His name was Ulysses. Ulysses was the only light bulb on the train platform but he always dreamed of being the headlight on the mighty train. Day after day he hung in the cold train yard crying little tiny light bulb tears, because he had to watch the mighty train roll by twice everyday. Eveyday he wished, but it seemed in vain.

Then, one glorious day, his prayers were answered. The mighty train rolled in with it's headlight out. The train conductor searched high and low but could not find a light bulb anywhere. Then he turned and saw Ulysses. Quickly he unscrewed Ulysses, carried him to the front of the train, and set him in the one place Ulysses had always dreamed of, the front headlight of the train.

But, as the mighty train pulled out of the station carrying the entire Union army south, another event was about to occur that Ulysses could never have fathomed. Just down the way, General Robert E. Lee stood in the middle of the tracks armed to the teeth with muskets and six shooters. His eyes were blood red and his demeanor was that of a crazy. As the mighty train raced south, Lee cursed Grant and yelled,

"THE WAR ENDS NOW YOU CUR!"

With a hoot and a hollar he fired round after round at the mighty train. A random shot shattered Ulysses as the train plowed Lee into oblivion.

And now the truth about the end of the Civil War has been written.

This is the most exciting news that I have heard today. Third Eye Blind is almost finished with their forth studio album and it could quite possibly come out in march. (3eb rocks)

A Day In the Life

statement - This is a piece I had to write for my creative writing class. I had to pick a family member and write, somthing, from their perspective.

I brush my long straight brown hair from my eyes as I come to rest in my favorite chair. I am so glad summer has started. In one single motion I position my sore feet on the automon?, my left hand reaches for the cool glass of Iced Tea (sweet), and my right hand takes hold of the mysterious book waiting by my side. It is good to be on vacation. No kids running around the house causing a rukass. Silence brods around me as I tentivly begin my journey into a new relm of wonder. The book cover creeks as I pry it from it's sleeping state. The pages release the words once hidden, into my imagination. I am falling.

"Mom...mom."

Somthing is not right! I am in the forest. Robin Hood is swinging past me. Who is yelling my name?

"Mom, Jesse hit me!"

Suddenly, I snap out of my trance. I see the exasperated expression on William's face. My journey will have to wait.

To start off, let me tell you that I use Rolling Stone to find out about music that I didn't know existed, but I hardly ever agree with Stone's assesement of how good the music is.

TV on the Radio - This is the first band I think you should check out. Rolling Stone says that the band's latest album Dear Science was the album of the year last year. I don't agree with that statement. I have not listened to the entire cd yet, but no one is going to convince me that Vampire Weekend and Coldplay didn't have the best albums last year. But, in TV's defense I will say that this is a cd worth checking out. First, go to YouTube and listen to Family Tree my favorite track from the album. Than listen to DLZ which seems to be a good listen to get a feel for the bands style. (It's a little Techno-ey, which could be a good or bad thing)

Kings of Leon - Next, check out these guys. They rock in that southern rock style (also check out My Morning Jacket, any album). The key tracks right now, from what I have heard, are Notion and Sex On Fire from Only By the Night. This is the band that Thomas and I saw open for Rage. They were pretty sweet.

MGMT - This is a hard band to explain. You almost need to hear them to believe it. They are a kind-of disco-funk band, but right now... today... not the 70's. You get this disco feel from Electric Feel and Time to Pretend and Weekend Wars are definetly songs worth checking out. Weekend Wars has a Vampire Weekend feel to me, if that meens anything to anyone.
